“There is no darkness so dense, so menacing, or so difficult that it cannot be overcome by light.” -Vern P. Stanfill
After reading the quote above, I thought how wonderful it would be to explore the topic using poetry, but unlike many very talented people here in blog land, I just don’t have the knack for that. So instead, I decided to just jot down some random thoughts in the form of reflections. Please know that I am a believer that light is everywhere, all of the time, and forever more. Even during the worst of times there is some light that exists. Even when we are gone, memories of us stay alive. Even if those that remembered us all die off, part of us is present influencing others or the world (or universe) in some way.
Sight I- Luckily very few of us are fully blind or kept in solitary confinement with no windows. Because of that, it is next to impossible to avoid seeing some light even at the darkest time of night. Though we may not have the night vision of an owl or cat, our eyes do adjust and we see at least the slightest light from a sliver of the moon, the stars, or the lights in homes or on streets in the distance. Most of us are never fully without sight. Even with all lights out in the house, we can maneuver through our bedrooms to the light switch in the hall, and find our way downstairs to our midnight glass of ice water.
Sight II – The dense darkness of close-mindedness exists in many, but even the most shut off minds will have glimmers of truth and understanding seep in over time. That is what makes us grow. I believe even those who fiercely lock out truth and understanding do see some at least at the moment of their deaths.
Depression – Those of us who have found ourselves in the deepest pit of depression can usually see the light at the top, but many may think it’s an impossible climb. It’s very important to remember (when in that state) that at times, the light begins to shine on you more strongly. If not, it is possible to maneuver your way up the pit to daylight. Grab hands, ropes, or ladders of help, as needed. Don’t expect to be able to escape it alone all of the time.
“The Body Electric” – The nervous system sends “signals” to the brain. Synapses are “firing”. Unless we are dead, there is always some electrical charge “light” going on in our brain and body. Celebrate that light for your whole life.
Goodness is always there – In my recent post “Hating is not fair” , Bryan Stevenson and I agree that the figurative light of goodness lives in every single one of us, even if some of us are also filled with dense darkness of thought and spirit.
Love – The ability to love is a light that lives with you forever. For people, love for and from others is important for well-being. But even for those alone, love for nature, animals or the God of their understanding, can be enough to help see them through the darkest times.
We live again to see the light – It is my personal opinion that all people will see the light at some point after their deaths. Even if it isn’t the light of a “Heaven”. If when I die I do not go to a “Heaven”, may my ashes be spread in or on the ground to give nutrients to the soil that feeds the plants, trees or grass. As they grow high, they continue to survive because of the sun’s light. Their deaths again give nutrients to others after them. Life therefore continues because of the nutrients in the soil and the reliability of light.
Earth will exist forever more – Earth is our beloved planet. I certainly expect to be on earth for the rest of my years. But if ever Earth burst into countless specks, it would continue to float in the universe within sight of stars galaxies away. I expect to be one of those specks. I expect that light will also shine on me, forever more.

Very poetic indeed. Reminds me of Goethe’s last words “Mehr Licht” (more light). BTW, that’s my guiding principle in life.

This approach to writing is fascinating! Never seen such freestyle mix of different ideas on one subject. It was easy to follow, and the ideas expressed were inspiring. I especially liked “The ability to love is a light that lives with you forever.”

Thank you again, Elena. The post you are referencing, “Dense darkness cut through by light” seems to be my most popular post in terms of “likes”. I should keep that approach in mind for future posts. Today’s post has the most comments of any of my posts so far. People have been so nice that I am on the verge of tears.

The world can be harsh and cruel, but we cannot let go of things, because underneath the churning and the upheavals, it is very possible that one day we might be able to bring a flame to the darkness in other people’s lives.
So we must push the boredom away, repair the dissatisfaction and the alienation, still the crosswinds of passion, and ignore the betrayals of the material world.
Even with the last ounce of strength, we must struggle toward light, for in the end, life becomes meaningful when it carries meaning for others.
