Major changes in life are stressful for anyone, but especially for people prone to, or with, bipolar disorder. My freshman year at college was, indeed, stressful. Even the positive stuff! Like many young college students, I did a lot of partying my first year. There were so many young people on the many campuses of the huge university I attended. So many activities! The city itself was far larger than my small hometown of three thousand, requiring buses to go from campus to campus. As a boarding student, I was away from folks long-term for the first time, caring for myself completely. My classes were intensive and the study environment was far different than I was used to. The joy and advantages of being occasionally hidden

Hiding is so often regarded as a negative action, but throughout our lives many of us also see the joy and advantage in it. When I was a little child, small or rarely frequented spaces had great appeal. You could see me (or not) under the dining room table, looking up at its underside, fascinated by the architecture formed by the legs of the chairs on its sides. I might have also been found (or not) in my bedroom closet, a dark place near piles of shoes, with hanging clothes gently caressing my face and shoulders. Why do such hiding places appeal to many children? Well, I can’t speak for others, but for me it was a chance to own my own special space, and see things from very different perspectives. Female struggling with relationships with other females

female friends2I am a woman in her 40s, happily married to a wonderful man for almost 20 years, but beyond that fact I also need to connect more fully with others, especially women.  It’s been quite a long time since I had a close relationship with a woman outside of my immediate family.
